Solving the housing crisis in Toronto

By: Bruce Van Dieten

An election is likely to be called this year. The Spadina-Fort York Greens plan on running our biggest campaign in the history of our riding and we want you to be part of this historical moment. After Annamie Paul nearly captured our neighbouring riding of Toronto Centre, we feel that now is the time to send a Spadina–Fort York Green Party Member of Parliament to Ottawa.

Our incumbent Liberal MP has been a champion of social housing for many years but very little has actually been accomplished. Since the early nineties, both Liberal and Conservative governments (minority or majority) have largely abandoned the issue of social housing.

The result is apparent in Trinity-Bellwoods, Alexandra Park and almost every park in our riding, where tent cities have sprung up — a stark reminder of our government’s failure. Even one person living in a tent in our city — the economic centre of one of the richest (and coldest) countries in the world — is ONE too many.

After decades in opposition, the NDP is still unable to force our current government to change the status quo.

Here is a recent CBC podcast on the issue of homelessness in our city:

Together, we can elect a Green MP who will enact change that matters to us.
